Rain Gear
A moto is not cancelled because it rains. This selection of BMX rain gear brings together waterproof jackets, windbreakers, overgloves and waiting capes in youth and adult sizes, chosen from the major BMX race brands so you can get through the winter season without dropping training.
BMX rain gear: staying sharp when the track is soaked
BMX racing happens in the rain. The surface goes greasy, the gate gets slippery, the cranks throw dirty water up on every turn, and the wait between two motos is spent standing in the downpour. Kitting yourself out properly is not about comfort: a frozen rider loses reaction time on the gate and concentration down the straight.
Jackets and windbreakers
The jacket goes over the race jersey, on the way up to the start hill and during the warm-up. Three criteria really matter.
- The durable water-repellent finish or waterproof membrane, with taped seams on the most complete models
- Breathability, without which you are soaked from the inside after ten minutes on the turbo trainer
- The cut: sleeves long enough with the arms extended, a dropped back hem, and a hood that either works over a helmet or comes off entirely
Overgloves and wet-weather gloves
A wet race glove loses its grip and swells on the grips. A waterproof overglove pulled on top keeps the hands dry until the last moment; it comes off before you roll onto the gate, since race gloves remain compulsory in competition. For winter training, a lined windproof glove takes over.
Protecting your vision in the wet
Rain and mud make goggles close to essential: a clear lens, an anti-fog coating that actually works and, at genuinely muddy meetings, a roll-off system or a stack of tear-offs. You will find the right models in our BMX goggles, and it is worth checking the state of the helmet visor, which cuts down the spray hitting the lens directly.
Staying dry between motos
This is the part most riders neglect. A loose cape or poncho pulled over the full kit, overshoes to keep the feet dry before the start, a change of clothes in the bag: those details are what make the difference across an eight-hour race day. Bring something to wipe the grips and the saddle down before each trip up to the hill as well.
Youth and adult sizes
Rain jackets come in kids sizes from the Micro and Mini categories upward. Size up: this layer goes over the long-sleeve jersey and sometimes over a back protector, and it has to go on and come off quickly, unaided, between two runs. Solid zips and simple drawcords beat a close cut that is impossible to manage with cold hands.
Caring for a water-repellent garment
The DWR finish wears off through washing and rubbing. Wash at 30 °C with a liquid detergent and no softener, then reactivate the treatment in a low-temperature tumble dryer or with a cool iron if the manufacturer allows it. A reproofing product applied at the start of the season extends a jacket's useful life considerably.
