Custom Builds

A custom BMX build means putting your race bike together part by part: frame, forks, wheels, drivetrain, brakes and cockpit. We assemble and set up the whole bike before shipping, drawing on the Inspyre, Chase, Meybo, Box Components and Tangent ranges.

Custom builds: a BMX race bike specified part by part

An off-the-shelf complete bike is a factory compromise: the maker pairs components from its own range at a consistent finish level. A custom build works the other way round. You start from the frame size that fits the rider, then choose each part according to real use and budget — including high-end wheels on a mid-range frame, if that is where the performance actually sits.

How a build works

It starts with a conversation: rider height, inside leg, race class, the type of tracks you ride, and the components you already own. We then draw up a part-by-part configuration, checking every compatibility along the way — bottom bracket standard, headset type, axle diameter, rear spacing. The bike is assembled, torque settings checked, drivetrain adjusted and wheels verified before shipping.

The parts to specify

  • Frame and forks: top tube size, aluminium or carbon, V-brake version or disc tab
  • Wheels: 451, 406 or 507 rims, hubs in 28 or 36 holes, axles in 10, 15 or 20 mm
  • Drivetrain: three-piece crankset, crank length, chainring and sprocket to suit the target gearing
  • Brakes: V-brake or disc, with a lever matched to hand size
  • Cockpit: handlebar width and rise, stem length, headset, grips
  • Finishing kit: saddle, seat post, seat clamp, number plate, bar pads

Who a custom build is for

It makes real sense in three cases. The rider who already owns components at their own numbers and only wants to buy what is missing. The out-of-standard build, for whom no complete bike works without modification — common in Pro XXL and above. And the rider chasing a specific weight, arbitrating for themselves between wheels, crankset and cockpit. For a first bike, on the other hand, a complete bike from the BMX bikes and frames section is usually the more direct route.

Why multi-brand matters here

A custom build is only worth doing if the choice is genuinely open. We depend on no single brand: an Inspyre frame can take Excess wheels, a Tangent drivetrain and a Box Components or Chase cockpit, if that is the combination that suits the rider. The advice is about how the whole bike hangs together, not about filling a catalogue.

The BMX RACING advice

Get in touch with the rider's height, their race class and your overall budget: we will propose a complete, costed and compatible configuration, and refine it with you. If you are still unsure about the frame size, start with the sizing chart, from BMX Mini to BMX Pro XL. Dispatched within 24 to 72 hours once the build is confirmed, you can spread the cost over 2 or 3 payments.
