BMX Mini
A Mini BMX bike is built for young riders of 110 to 121 cm, roughly 5 to 7 years old. Complete bikes ready to ride, top tube from 17" to 17.5", 20 inch wheels on 451 rims, short cranks and rim braking. Ranges from Chase, Meybo and Position One.
BMX Mini: the first race size, and how to check it is the right one
Mini is the first race class in BMX after Micro. It takes children measuring between 110 and 121 cm, generally aged 5 to 7. At this age the right size matters more than the level of equipment: a bike that is too big stops the child putting a foot down at a standstill in the gate and lifting the chest over the jumps.
Is it the right size for my child?
Measure the child barefoot, back to the wall, and compare with the neighbouring sizes:

Two checks complete the height measurement. At a standstill, saddle low, the child should put both feet on the ground. In the gate position, elbows bent, the shoulders should stay ahead of the stem without the arms having to stretch. At the bottom of the band and starting out, stay in Mini; at 120 cm and already in a club, look at our BMX Junior bikes to avoid changing bike mid-season.
What sets a Mini frame apart
- Top tube 17" to 17.5": the reference figure for the class
- 20" wheels on 451 rims, tyres in 20 x 1-1/8" or 20 x 1-3/8"
- Cranks from 140 to 150 mm, essential for a smooth pedal stroke on short legs
- Rim braking (V-brake) with a long-pull small-hands lever
- Narrow handlebar with moderate rise, small-diameter grips
- Euro or Mid bottom bracket shell depending on brand, three-piece crankset on higher models
Weight, the number one criterion in Mini
A child of 20 to 25 kg is moving a bike that weighs close to half their own body weight. Every hundred grams is felt out of the gate and on every re-acceleration. That is what separates an aluminium platform with a steel fork from a build with a 6061-T6 frame and a carbon fork.
The models available in Mini
Chase runs its Edge Mini with a triple-butted 6061-T6 aluminium frame and carbon fork. Meybo offers the TLNT in a Mini version, a Dutch platform well proven at club level. Position One covers the entry level with an aluminium frame and steel fork. Being multi-brand means you can compare all three on the same top tube and choose on actual weight.
Rim braking: simple and sufficient
In Mini the rear V-brake remains the norm. It is light, adjusts without special tools and can be repaired trackside. Above all, check that the lever is a small-hands model with adjustable reach, so the child can reach it without letting go of the handlebar. Pads wear fast on sandy tracks: keep a spare pair.
Anticipating the move to Junior
A child can grow 6 to 8 cm in a year. From 118 to 120 cm, prepare the move to Junior: the same 20" wheel on 451 rims, but a top tube of 17.75" to 18.25" and slightly longer cranks. Wheels, saddle, number plate and protective gear all carry over from one size to the next; only the frame changes.
