Padded Undershorts
Worn under the race kit, BMX padded shorts absorb crash impacts on the hips, the tailbone and the thighs. Shorty or full-length versions, hard caps or soft foams, in youth and adult sizes from Fuse and the major BMX race brands, to give young riders and Pros alike more confidence.
BMX padded undershorts: the layer that absorbs the hit
A BMX race crash rarely ends on your hands. It ends on the hip, the buttock or the top of the thigh, at speed on the exit of a berm or on a landing gone wrong. Padded undershorts are the layer that soaks up that impact, invisible under the jersey and the race pants. They are technical underwear, not an outer garment.
Not to be confused with race pants
The garments listed here are never worn on their own on the track: they do not satisfy the covered-leg requirement and they are not built to survive abrasion. They complement your race pants, sliding underneath them. One resists sliding, the other absorbs shock, and the two functions do not replace each other.
The areas genuinely covered
- Hips: side caps, by far the most frequently hit area
- Tailbone and sacrum: rear plate, decisive in a sit-down crash
- Glutes: full-surface cushioning foam
- Thighs: front panels on the full-length versions
- Knees: on full-length versions only, otherwise add separate knee pads
Hard caps or soft foams
Two philosophies compete. Hard caps, usually injection-moulded polymer backed with EVA foam, spread energy across a wide area: maximum protection, more bulk under the pants. Multi-layer or impact-stiffening soft foams stay flexible while you pedal and harden on impact: you forget they are there and they disappear under a close race cut. For daily training, flexibility wins; for a rider stringing motos together on fast tracks, hard caps keep the advantage.
Shorty or full-length
The shorty stops at mid-thigh and covers hips, tailbone and glutes: it is the most popular format, the lightest and the easiest to combine with separate knee pads. The full-length version runs to the knee or even the shin and forms continuous protection from the waist down. It is warmer, so it suits the cold season and technical tracks better.
Sizing and layering
The rule is simple: padded undershorts are chosen close to the body without squeezing, and the race pants one size up from your usual size if you wear both. A cap that shifts around will not be over the right area at the moment of impact. Check as well that the hip cap does not clash with the ratchet waistband of your race pants.
Micro and Mini riders
Among the youngest riders, fear of falling holds progress back far more than a lack of power does. A padded shorty often changes everything while they are learning the gate and their first doubles. Kids sizes start from around 4-6 years, with soft foams suited to slim frames and a wide elastic waist instead of mechanical adjustment.
The BMX RACING view
We sell Fuse protection alongside several other brands, so we have no reason to push one model over another. Tell us the rider's age, size and how often they ride, and we will point you to the shorty or the full-length version that genuinely fits, plus the back protectors that go with it. Dispatched within 24 to 72 hours, payable in 2 or 3 instalments.
