BMX race disc brakes: which kit for which bike

Long confined to Cruiser bikes and Pro riders, disc braking has spread across recent race frames, which now come with a caliper mount as standard. Unlike a V-brake, which you can build up part by part, a disc brake has to be thought of as a complete system: caliper, lever and the way force is transmitted are designed together.

Mechanical or hydraulic: two philosophies

A mechanical system runs on a conventional cable and a long-pull lever. It is simpler to install, can be repaired trackside with a set of Allen keys and tolerates being packed into a bike bag far better. A hydraulic system transmits force through fluid in a hose: finer modulation, less effort at the lever, automatic take-up of pad wear, but periodic bleeding and dedicated tools.

What a disc brake kit contains

• The caliper, in Post Mount (two M6 bolts, 74 mm spacing) or IS (51 mm spacing).
• The lever: long pull for mechanical, with an integrated master cylinder for hydraulic.
• The link: stainless inner wire with compressionless housing, or a pre-filled hose.
• The rotor, in 140 or 160 mm, with its mounting hardware.
• Depending on the model, the diameter adaptor or caliper mounting plate.

Rotor diameter: 140 or 160 mm

The 140 mm rotor favours low weight and progressive modulation: it is the usual choice on 20 inch bikes, from Junior to Expert. The 160 mm gives more leverage and more surface for heat exchange, useful in Pro, in Pro XL and above all on the heavier, faster 24 inch Cruiser. Compatibility: what to check on the bike

Three points decide whether the kit fits. The frame first: it needs an integrated caliper mount on the left chainstay, or it must accept a bolt-on plate clamped by the wheel axle — see our disc brake mounts. The rear hub next: it has to be drilled IS 6-bolt or carry a Centerlock interface, as a plain V-brake hub cannot be drilled afterwards. Finally clearance: rotor, caliper and chain tensioner must coexist without contact, particularly on frames with horizontal dropouts.

For which rider and which use

A disc brake makes sense on fast tracks and soaked surfaces, where a V-brake loses its bite on the first wet wheel revolution. It also becomes obvious on carbon wheels, whose rim no longer has to take any braking heat at all. In Micro and Mini, on the other hand, the added weight and cost are rarely justified: a well-adjusted V-brake and a short-reach lever serve better.

Fitting and bedding-in: the BMX RACING advice

A new rotor needs bedding-in: around ten progressive stops without locking the wheel, to transfer pad material onto the braking track and reach full bite. Keep fingers and degreaser away from both rotor and pads.
