BMX steering limiter: capping the turn to protect rider and bike

In a crash landing off a double or in a berm, free handlebars swing through half a turn instantly. The rider takes the bar in the ribs, the brake outer twists and the lever marks the top tube. A steering limiter — or rotation stop — mechanically restricts that movement to an angle that is still useful for riding, usually around an eighth of a turn each way.

What a rotation stop actually does

• Stops the handlebars from spinning right round in a crash
• Keeps the lever or the shifter from hitting the frame
• Protects the brake outer and cable, which no longer wrap around the steerer
• Reassures young riders, whose bars always come back to the same reference point
• Limits accidental steering input while sitting in the gate

The types of limiter we stock

The most common design is a ring or washer fitted on the steerer with a tab or pin that comes up against the head tube, or against a part fixed to the frame. Other systems work with stops mounted either side of the head tube. Materials range from nylon and POM, quiet and slightly flexible, to machined aluminium, more durable but harder on the paint.

Standards and compatibility

Almost every limiter is made for a 1"1/8 (28.6 mm) steerer, the universal BMX Race standard. Next, check the type of headset: integrated and semi-integrated designs do not offer the same bearing surface above the head tube, and some limiters only fit one of the two. Finally, the part adds a few millimetres to the stack: remove the equivalent in headset spacers so the stem returns to its height and the top cap can still preload correctly.

Which riders it suits

A steering limiter is aimed first at the Micro, Mini and Junior categories, and at any rider new to racing. On 18" and 20" 406 bikes built for the youngest riders, it is one of the safety items fitted at the first build. In Expert and Pro it is rarer: experienced riders prefer completely free steering, even if that means replacing a handlebar after a crash.

Fitting and adjustment

The limiter goes on when the stem comes off, so at the same time as a bar or spacer change. Position the stop with the bars straight, check that the wheel turns symmetrically left and right, then reset the headset adjustment before torquing the stem. Check it again after the first session: nylon rings settle slightly.
