Spokes
Build and repair your wheels with our stainless steel BMX spokes: lengths from 165 to 237 mm in fine increments, 14G gauge, plain or double butted, in black and chrome finishes. Brands Mach1 and Odyssey, sold individually, in packs or by the box, for 20" and 24" Cruiser wheels.
BMX race spokes: the part that holds the wheel in tension
A spoke does not carry the wheel, it holds it in tension between hub and rim. That tension, shared across 28 or 36 spokes, is what absorbs jump landings and cornering loads. One broken or slack spoke throws the whole wheel out immediately: this is a routine repair part, and one worth keeping spares of in the kit bag.
Stainless, gauge and double butted
Stainless steel is the standard material: it resists corrosion and holds its tension season after season. The 14G gauge (2.0 mm) is the reference in BMX Race, with a standard thread pitch that accepts common nipples. A double butted spoke is thinned down the middle and keeps full thickness at both ends: it takes weight out of the wheel and absorbs shock better, without losing strength where the stress concentrates. Black and chrome finishes are mechanically identical.
Lengths available and rough guides by wheel size
- 20" front wheel: most often between 165 and 190 mm.
- 20" rear wheel: most often between 180 and 195 mm, and hub dish may call for two different lengths.
- 24" Cruiser wheel: roughly 204 to 237 mm.
These ranges are a guide, not an order form. The exact length has to be calculated.
How to calculate the right length
Four figures are enough: the rim's effective diameter (ERD), the hub flange hole circle diameter, the distance from each flange to the centre line, and the number of crossings. BMX wheels are almost always laced 3-cross; radial lacing is reserved for certain front wheels with no rim brake. A 2 mm error is enough for the spoke to poke through the rim tape or to fall short of the thread: measure rather than estimate, or send us the exact references of your hub and rim.
Compatibility: rim, hub, nipples
- Matching drilling: a 36H rim is laced to a 36H hub, never anything else. See our BMX rims and our BMX hubs.
- Rim spoke hole diameter: it has to accept the nipple you choose.
- Thread: 14G spokes screw into spoke nipples of the same pitch, in brass or aluminium.
- Elbow: the standard 90° elbow seats correctly on the flanges of common BMX hubs.
How many spokes to order
A 28H wheel needs 28 spokes, a 36H wheel needs 36. For a common 28 front / 36 rear pair, count on 64 spokes as a minimum, and add a few spares in each length: that is precisely what runs out on a Sunday race day. Pack and box quantities cover a full pair with margin to spare.
The brands we stock
Mach1 is the reference in stainless spokes, in black or chrome, sold in boxes of 72 or bags of 500. Odyssey offers black spokes in packs of 40, widely used for repairs. Excess and Pride cover the lengths used on the wheels they build, which makes like-for-like replacement straightforward. For unusual lengths and custom builds we work with the major BMX Race brands so the full 165 to 237 mm range is covered.
Tension, checks and replacement
Check tension by hand several times a season: a spoke softer than its neighbours is announcing a break. After an impact, check the wheel for lateral and radial run-out before riding again. A broken spoke is always replaced with the same length and the same gauge, and the wheel retensioned and trued straight afterwards — a single replacement without retruing simply fatigues the neighbouring spokes.
The BMX RACING advice
Send us the reference of your rim and hub: we work out the exact length and quantity, including the two different lengths of a dished rear wheel. Dispatched within 24 to 72 hours, you can spread the cost over 2 or 3 payments.
Questions fréquentes
How do I choose replacement spokes?
Spokes are chosen at the right length according to the rim and hub, with their nipples. If a spoke breaks, replace it and re-tension the wheel to keep it true.
