Brake calipers

The BMX brake caliper is the part that turns cable pull into stopping power. Here you will find V-brake calipers in forged or CNC-machined aluminium with arms of 108 to 110 mm, plus mechanical and hydraulic disc calipers, from Promax, Box Components, Insight, Shimano and Elevn.

BMX brake calipers: V-brake and disc, fitting and set-up

On a race bike the rear caliper works alone. Its stiffness dictates how well you can modulate: an arm that flexes under load gives that spongy feeling neither a new cable nor fresh pads will ever cure. That is exactly why forged or fully machined bodies are worth the money.

V-brake calipers

The V-brake, or linear-pull brake, is made of two independent arms pivoting on the frame bosses, joined by a noodle and its rubber boot. Arms of 108 to 110 mm are the BMX race norm: shorter than on a mountain bike, they clear the tyre while keeping a firm mechanical advantage. Bodies in forged 6061 or machined 7075 aluminium drop comfortably under 200 g per pair, adjustable return springs included.

Disc brake calipers

A mechanical caliper is pulled by a cable: one moving piston pushes the pad against the rotor while the second pad stays fixed and is set by a dial. A hydraulic caliper uses two opposed pistons fed by a hose, which gives symmetrical clamping, less effort at the lever and automatic take-up of pad wear. Both come in Post Mount, 74 mm spacing, or IS, 51 mm spacing. See all our disc brake kits.

Mounting standards and compatibility

  • V-brake: welded 8 mm bosses on the frame, M6 fixing bolts.
  • Disc: Post Mount or IS tab on the left chainstay, or a bolt-on disc brake mount.
  • Lever: long pull is mandatory for a V-brake or a cable disc caliper, matching lever for hydraulic.
  • Wheel: rim with a machined braking surface for V-brake, drilled hub for disc.

Set-up: the step that makes the difference

A V-brake is set in three stages. First position the pads on the braking surface, without overhanging the tyre or the rim edge, with a slight toe-in at the front. Then balance the return spring tension, one side screw at a time, until both arms open by the same angle. Finally adjust free travel at the lever barrel, leaving roughly 1 mm between each pad and the rim. On a disc caliper, everything comes down to centring the body over the rotor and setting the fixed pad.

Choosing by rider and programme

In Micro, Mini and Junior, a light V-brake paired with a low-effort lever is enough and stays easy for parents to maintain. In Expert and Pro, a stiffer caliper becomes noticeable on late braking into a berm. In Cruiser, the extra weight of a 24 inch bike argues for a disc brake or, failing that, for a high-end V-brake with performance pads.

The brands

Promax covers most of the V-brake market with reliable calipers that are easy to adjust. Box Components focuses on arm stiffness and pivot finish. Insight offers light sets well suited to the smaller categories. Shimano and Elevn are mainly present on disc, respectively in hydraulics and in race-oriented solutions.

The BMX RACING advice

A caliper is never chosen on its own: it forms a system with the lever, the cable and the brake pads. Tell us your frame and your current build and we will confirm the combination. Dispatched within 24 to 72 hours and you can spread the cost over 2 or 3 payments with Alma.

Questions fréquentes

V-brake or disc caliper?

The V-brake is light and easy to maintain; the disc caliper offers more powerful and consistent braking, particularly in the rain. The choice depends on your frame and wheel setup.
