BMX race bottom brackets: four standards, one right answer

The bottom bracket is the shell welded into the base of the frame, where the down tube meets the chainstays. Its width and its bore are fixed by the frame manufacturer: you do not choose your standard, you identify it. What you do choose is bearing quality and the way those bearings take the crank spindle.

The four BMX standards

• Euro BB: threaded shell, 68 mm wide (sometimes 73 mm), with screw-in cups and external bearings. English thread 1.37" x 24, the drive-side cup being reverse threaded.
• Mid BB: plain 41 mm bore, bearings pressed straight into the shell. This is the most common standard on current race frames.
• Spanish BB: 37 mm bore, again with pressed bearings. More compact and lighter, often found on smaller sizes and older frames.
• American BB: 51 mm bore, the widest of the four, with bearings held in pressed cups.

Identifying your shell in two minutes

Take the cranks out and look inside the shell. A visible thread means Euro BB. Otherwise, measure the internal diameter with a vernier caliper: 37 mm for Spanish, 41 mm for Mid, 51 mm for American. Then measure the shell width, 68 or 73 mm, because it dictates the usable spindle length and the number of spacers you will need.

Bearings, spindles and reducer sleeves

Bearings are sealed cartridge units whose inner diameter matches the crank spindle: 19, 22 or 24 mm. The same Mid shell can therefore take a 19 mm or a 22 mm spindle depending on the bearing set you choose. Reducer sleeves let a thinner spindle run in a larger bearing, but they add an interface: at a high level of riding, a bearing set in the correct diameter is the better answer.

Compatibility with cranks and chain line

A bottom bracket only makes sense as part of a coherent set: the same spindle diameter as your crank arms, a spindle length suited to the shell width, and spacers split either side to line the chainring or sprocket up with the rear cog. A badly stacked set of spacers shows up as a chain rubbing the chainstay or jumping off under the first pedal stroke. Check that alignment every time you change chainring or rear sprocket.

Servicing and signs of wear

A bottom bracket bearing lives in dust and takes the jet of every wash. It is replaced, not repaired: as soon as a tight spot, side play or a gritty feel appears when you spin the crank without the chain on, change it. Fitting a press-fit bottom bracket calls for a press or a bearing drift — a mallet on a bearing marks it permanently.
