BMX race shoes: flat or clipless, how to decide

The shoe is part of the rider's own drivetrain: every watt of the start goes through it, at the moment the foot has to stay welded to the pedal for the first three cranks. A soft-soled street trainer deforms, flattens the pins and slips at the first jump. Two families sit side by side in BMX racing, and the choice starts with the pedals already fitted to the bike.

Shoes for flat pedals

These sit on a soft rubber sole, flat and without lugs, which keys into the pins of the pedal. The upper is reinforced along the sides to take crank rub, and the toe box is protected against impacts. It is the logical choice for beginners, for the Micro, Mini and Expert categories, and for every rider who wants to put a foot down instantly in a berm.

Clipless shoes and the SPD standard

• Two-bolt drilling, SPD standard, the only pattern really used in BMX racing.
• Metal cleats supplied with the pedal, never with the shoe: check you have a pair.
• Stiff sole in filled nylon or carbon composite so nothing is lost in the pedal stroke.
• Cleat adjustment fore and aft and in rotation, to line the pedal axle up with the ball of the foot.
• Release tension adjustable on the pedal: start at the lightest setting.

Choosing your size and hold

Try shoes at the end of the day, with the foot slightly swollen, wearing the sock you race in: you want about five millimetres in front of the longest toe, with no sideways movement inside the shoe. Closure systems vary — laces with a retaining strap, micro-adjust dials, hook-and-loop straps. On a muddy track a dial cleans up better than laces; for the youngest riders, hook-and-loop straps avoid a lace caught in the chainring.

Moving a young rider to clipless

There is no official age: the switch happens once the rider has their lines, their landings and their gate under control on flat pedals. Going clipless too early creates hesitation at the gate and low-speed falls. Most clubs advise waiting for the Expert or Junior categories, and keeping a pair of flat shoes for skills sessions and manual work.

Care and service life

The sole rubber is the wear item: as soon as it goes smooth, or the pins stop biting, the foot comes off. On clipless models, check the cleat bolts regularly, as track vibration works them loose. Dry shoes in open air, never on a radiator, and pull the insoles out after a session in the rain.
