The reasons a drivetrain part gets reduced
A tooth count with little demand, a crank arm length at the end of its run, an anodised colour dropped by the brand: the drivetrain accumulates references that leave the range without losing any of their quality. Add to that the kits of a previous model year, replaced by a new finish.
Three cross-checks you cannot skip
A drivetrain is a set: an isolated reduced part only fits if it speaks the same language as the rest. Check the crank spindle diameter, 19, 22 or 24 mm, and the bottom bracket standard on your frame — Euro BB, Mid BB, Spanish BB or American BB. Then check the chain pitch, 1/8" or 3/32", which must be identical on chain, sprocket and rear cog. Finally, the sprocket drive: spline drive or bolt drive.
What is left, and where the detail sits
On a reduced sprocket there is often one tooth count and one bolt pattern left; on a crankset, a single arm length.
